Welding Safety Training Talk

A training talk on welding safety for welders and anyone who works near welding - the risks, the risk assessment and PPE, equipment checks, fume control and fire precautions. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.

Two Files in One Download

Talk Description

  • What welding is, and the risks it can present
  • Understanding the risk, the risk assessment and the personal protective equipment (PPE) needed
  • Checking welding equipment before use
  • Handling welding equipment, and posture
  • Ventilation and welding fumes - all welding fumes can cause lung cancer
  • Fire risk, fire extinguishers and first aid arrangements

Running the Talk

Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.

Why Welding Fume Gets Its Own Point

The talk gives ventilation and welding fume a point of their own because all welding fume can cause lung cancer. Setting it apart means welders hear the reason for extraction and ventilation, not just the rule.

Adapting the Talk

Both files are fully editable, so add the welding processes used on your site, the extraction and PPE provided, and where the fire extinguishers and first aid kits are kept. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.

Keeping the Training Record

File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.

Who Is It For?

Welders, fabricators and anyone who works nearby or supervises welding work. Use it at induction, as a refresher and when different welding equipment or processes come into use.

Delivering Talks Regularly

Short, regular talks keep health and safety in front of people. Run this one alongside the other health and safety training talks to build awareness one topic at a time.

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
