Checklists for Inspection of Premises
To ensure your premises are safe at all times, it’s a good idea to plan and complete regular inspections to identify and correct any hazards and ensure all required safety equipment is in place and operational.
To make sure inspections are effective a checklist can be used to prompt everything that needs to be inspected and also create a documented record to show that inspections have been completed correctly.
Using a premises inspection checklist
The type of premises checklist and frequency of inspection should be determined by the overall level of risk as identified in the premises risk assessment(s). With low-risk premises it may just be necessary to complete an inspection on a weekly or monthly basis, if there are higher risks this frequency may be increased to daily or even hourly inspections and may need a combination of different inspection checklists.
Some of the areas an inspection checklist can cover include;
- Health and safety signage (checking that existing signage is clearly visible)
- Health and safety guidance (ensure that correct safety guidance available for operations and use of machinery)
- First aid kit(s) (check that in designated locations and correctly stocked)
- Risk assessments (in place for all current hazards)
- DSE assessments (check that completed in the office and updated if layout changed)
- Electrical equipment and systems (visual check and check that being inspected as required)
- Plant and equipment (check that everything being maintained and inspected as required)
- Legionella risk (check that water system safe and checked)
- Physical security / Access control (check that security and access control being maintained)
- Personal Protective Equipment (check that available and being issued and used correctly)
- Emergency arrangements (fire safety arrangements and equipment)
- Waste Management (bins and recycling facilities being used correctly)
- Storage and use of oils and chemicals (check that used and stored correctly)
- Quarantine process (check that faulty items and equipment quarantined correctly)
- Paperwork (checks that key paperwork including pre-start safety & quality checks completed)
Once the hazards and specific items needing inspected have been identified, these should be listed on the inspection checklist, ensuring that there is also a system in place for reporting any issues identified.
