Health and Safety Policy Template

Health and safety policy templates in five versions, so the one that fits your organisation can be used: an ISO 45001 policy, a general policy statement, and three combined policy and arrangements documents for smaller companies.

Each version has Approved By and Date Approved fields. The ISO 45001 policy and the policy statement carry a Public information classification; the policy and arrangements versions are marked Business Use.

What the ISO 45001 Policy Covers

  • Commitment - the highest priority on health and safety, a safe and healthy working environment extending to the public, property and the environment, and the prevention of injury and ill health
  • Management system - an OH&S management system meeting ISO 45001, taking reasonably practicable steps and complying with statutory requirements and approved codes of practice
  • Safety culture - reporting incidents and near misses and suggesting safer ways of working, with reports investigated
  • Risk assessments and inspections - an ongoing programme, with findings reviewed to check the adequacy of controls
  • Consultation - consultation and participation of workers and their representatives
  • Responsibilities - management and all workers, with everyone working on the organisation's behalf told of their obligations
  • Review and improvement - reviewed within 12 months, continual improvement, and objectives set at management review

Five Versions Supplied

  • P-3 Health and Safety Policy - the ISO 45001 policy described above
  • V2 Health and Safety Policy Statement - a statement of commitments without reference to ISO 45001, naming who holds overall responsibility
  • V3 Policy and Arrangements - the policy with an arrangements table (overall responsibility, competent advice, poster and guidance, first aid, inspections, emergency procedures and fire safety) and a General Risk Assessment
  • V4 Policy and Arrangements - as V3, with a Fire Safety Risk Assessment added
  • V5 Policy and Arrangements - the policy and arrangements without the risk assessment tables, with a line to record where risk assessments are kept

Built for ISO 45001 Clause 5.2

The ISO 45001 version includes the commitments clause 5.2 asks for: safe and healthy working conditions to prevent injury and ill health, a framework for objectives, fulfilling legal requirements, eliminating hazards and reducing risks, continual improvement, and consultation and participation of workers.

Who Needs a Health and Safety Policy?

Every organisation working to ISO 45001, and organisations completing Constructionline, SSIP or Common Assessment Standard applications, which ask for a health and safety policy approved by the most senior person in the organisation.

Included in the ISO 45001 Toolkit

This policy is part of the ISO 45001 Toolkit and is also included in the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 toolkits and every alphaZ ISO toolkit that combines them.

Works with the Health and Safety Policy Procedure

The PP-7-100 Health and Safety Policy Procedure sets out the health and safety arrangements behind the policy, and the OHS1-1 Health and Safety Awareness Staff Handbook is written for workers.
