ISO 14001:2026 Internal Audit Checklist Template
A full clause internal audit checklist for ISO 14001:2026, working through each clause of the standard from 4.1 to 10.2 with space to record the evidence viewed, responses and findings against each requirement. It is set out on the F-Q2A Audit Checklist format, with the scope, criteria, site, participants, auditor and date recorded at the top.
A second checklist covers the documentation required for an environmental management system, listing the mandatory documents and records with the clause each one comes from, so a documentation review can be completed on its own or alongside the full clause audit.
Note: ISO clause checklists only include the clause numbers and short prompts for each clause (due to copyright reasons) and therefore a full version of the ISO standard is required to be used in conjunction with these checklists.
What the Checklists Cover
- Context and leadership - external and internal issues, interested parties, the scope of the environmental management system, leadership, environmental policy and roles
- Planning - risks and opportunities, environmental aspects, compliance obligations, planning action, environmental objectives and planning of changes
- Support - resources, competence, awareness, internal and external communication and documented information
- Operation - operational planning and control, and emergency preparedness and response
- Performance evaluation and improvement - monitoring and measurement, evaluation of compliance, internal audit and the audit programme, management review, continual improvement, and nonconformity and corrective action
- Documentation - the mandatory documents and records for the environmental management system
Built for ISO 14001:2026
The checklist follows the clause numbering and requirements of ISO 14001:2026, including:
- Environmental conditions such as climate change, biodiversity, pollution levels and resource availability (clause 4.1)
- Planning action on aspects, compliance obligations and risks and opportunities (clause 6.1.4)
- Planning of changes to the environmental management system (clause 6.3)
- A life cycle perspective in operational planning and control (clause 8.1)
Using the Checklists
Record the scope and criteria at the top, then work through each clause, noting the evidence viewed and any findings as you go. The completed checklist becomes the record of the audit, and findings are followed up through corrective action. Compliance obligations can be checked against the legal register during the audit, with the result recorded against evaluation of compliance at clause 9.1.2. Audits can be spread across the year using the ER11 Audit Schedule, with the full clause checklist covering the whole standard over the audit programme.
A completed example of the ISO 14001:2026 checklist is available with an alphaZ Subscription.
Included in the ISO 14001 Toolkit
These checklists are part of the ISO 14001 Toolkit and every alphaZ ISO toolkit that covers ISO 14001, including the integrated toolkits.
ISO 14001:2015 Checklists
For organisations still working to ISO 14001:2015 during the transition period, the ISO 14001:2015 Requirements Checklists remain available, and the ISO 14001:2026 Correlation maps the standard to the alphaZ documents.
