BS EN 1090 Compliance and FPC Guidance
A general guidance document on BS EN 1090 compliance and factory production control (FPC) for businesses fabricating steel and aluminium structures. It explains the standards that apply, welding coordination, welding procedure specifications, welder qualification, welding quality management and final inspection and testing.
Topics Covered
- Execution of steel and aluminium structures - the parts of BS EN 1090 that steel, aluminium and cold-formed structural components must meet
- Quality requirements for fusion welding - applying the relevant part of ISO 3834 for the execution class, typically ISO 3834-3 for EXC2
- Welding coordination - the responsible welding coordinator or Depute allocating tasks, with staff working to the NSSS and approved equipment and materials
- Quality levels for imperfections - meeting the ISO 5817 tolerances for weld imperfections at the quality level required for the execution class
- Welding procedure specifications - preparing and qualifying procedures, test pieces tested by an accredited laboratory, and the authority to stop production
- Qualification testing of welders - qualifying welders to ISO 9606, keeping certificates current and requalifying after concerns or a lapse of more than six months
- Welding quality management - checks on job information, procedures, equipment and working conditions before welding, and sign-off or red marking afterwards
- Final inspection and testing - dimensional and visual inspection, non-destructive testing where specified, marking passed materials and patrol inspections during production
Who Is It For?
Responsible welding coordinators and their Deputes, welders, inspectors and production staff in businesses fabricating steel or aluminium structural components to BS EN 1090.
Supplied with the Training Talk
This guidance is supplied with the TT-4-02 BS EN 1090 Compliance and Factory Production Control (FPC) training talk. Buy the training talk to download the talk and this guidance together, or download both with an alphaZ Subscription.
Using the Guidance
Issue it to welding and production staff as part of their induction to factory production control, and keep it as a reference alongside the welding records. Record who has received it, for example on the training matrix.
The Role of the Welding Coordinator
The responsible welding coordinator, or Depute, runs through the whole guidance. The coordinator allocates welding tasks, prepares and approves welding procedure specifications, keeps welder qualifications current, checks conditions before welding starts, carries out patrol inspections and gives final approval before materials are marked ready for dispatch. The coordinator can also call for requalification and stop production over weld quality concerns.
Adapting the Guidance
Edit the guidance to match your own arrangements - the names of your coordinator and Depute, the execution classes and standards you work to, your marking colours and your welding record and inspection forms.
